From Northern British Columbia, Canada, to California, a rugged spine of mountains stretches for almost 1,500 miles parallel to the Pacific coast of North America. Along the slopes and in the valleys of these mountains, the humus-rich soil nourishes mixed softwood forests in vast abundance.
The majority of Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) grows in coastal forests. Western Red Cedars grow also in the drier interior forests of British Columbia, Washington, Idaho and Montana where they are smaller in stature with a tight knotted growth characteristic.

Cedars rarely grow in pure stands but are generally found in association with other species. A large tree, the western red cedar grows to more than 60 metres, almost 200 ft. high and can live up to 800 years. Western Red Cedar forests are predominantly managed forests, in which controlled
harvests, natural regeneration and reforestation programs ensure a perpetual harvest. Buying our furniture will not contribute to the destruction of old growth or original growth forests.
It is free of pitch and resin and it finishes to a richly glowing surface that can be enhanced with semi-transparent or full-bodied stains

The Eastern or Chinese Oak (Quercus aliena) ranges across Eastern Asia through China, Japan and Korea.
It grows to a height of 66' (20m) with a span of 50'.
It has similar hardness characteristics to Red Oak but slightly less so as it tends to be harvested when younger so on the Janka hardness scale it rates 1210 vs Red Oak's 1290.
As well as its use in furniture it has been used quite extensively for wood flooring due to its relative hardness.
The acorns have also been used in Asia as a coffee substitute and also after being ground and the high tannin content leached out, as a food thickening agent and flour substitute.
It's the tannin content that gives Chinese Oak its abilities to resist rotting and fight off insect attack.
The Color of the heartwood is light brown; some boards may have a pinkish tint or a slight grayish cast, sapwood is white to cream
The Grain is open, with longer rays than red oak, occasional crotches, swirls and burls. Plain sawn boards have a plumed or flared grain patterns with low figuring. Quarter sawn have a flake pattern sometimes called tiger rays or butterflies.
All our Oak items are stained with a light oil for additional weatherproofing from the elements and this also gives a uniform apperance to the wood. They are crafted using mortise and tenon joinery with Swedish exterior grade Casco Nobel glue for longlasting stability.
